Oregon has been my home since birth and Central Oregon since 2007. My time here in the Bend area has been rich with community since the beginning and has been the strong connecting thread through my work as a clothing designer for many years and a lover of all things outdoors.
When I became a mother in 2013, at home in water; I was awe struck by the space women were holding during that transition. At the time I did not really know what a doula was, only that I knew the presence of the women was impactful, even the ones who were merely observing. Years later at a women’s gathering, I heard of a workshop called the Doula’s Path. Something was physically pulling me to it, and it became clear during it that there was something for me there. The seed was planted and although it took years for me step fully in, my pace was my own. Honoring the time of one’s pace, as in labor, has been an important lesson. I went through a number of life experiences and healing over the years, that confirmed in me that the medicine I have to offer in this life comes from this sacred time in the womb. For mothers, partners, families and for all the babes needing as much love, support and ease as they go through this transition.
As the universe planted the seeds and gently tugged me towards this work I explored workshops and read many books, but the one holistic certification I wanted to do required I be present at a birth first. So when a friend asked me if I would be her doula, all the pieces seemed to be coming together. The birth went beautifully smooth, it was powerfully confirming, but it happened mid March 2020. The certification classes were halted and I could not receive any other certification with hospital births being restricted as well. I like to look at this time as the rest period mamas can sometimes get before pushing begins.
In 2022 I was finally able to do the holistic certification! I have never felt so eager and spongelike, taking in everything the teacher breathed. It was beyond invigorating and inspiring. The wealth of wisdom poured out of her with so much passion and I was drinking it all in. Since then, I have continued to deepen my knowledge absorbing every book, podcast and birth journey or experience I can find. I’ve made some incredible connections with other birth workers in the area and feel the web growing and connecting in and around the community I have nurtured here for many years. I’ve continued to do my own inner personal work as well. Connection is a major lifeline and above most things I desire to nurture it within myself, mother nature, family, friends, community and so forth.
As a birth doula, my journey into this transformative profession is deeply rooted in my personal experiences. Through my own challenges and triumphs, I’ve cultivated a deep sense of empathy and a genuine passion through motherhood. Along with the journey as a mother, life has offered me some of its greatest lessons from my time on rivers. Rafting is a great passion and above all is has shown me how to navigate challenges and embrace the flow. We find the currents in every twist and turn, sometimes rest in an eddy or place memories on the banks….. sometimes we paddle hard and face our fears head on, and whoop with joy as we ride the big waves! The rough patches can last for miles, and we gain strength through the perseverance. Each bend can hold a story as can the calm waters allowing us to rest, restore and take in all the beauty. We adapt to the ebb and flow, find connection with the natural world and with it, balance and fulfillment in our journey. All these things I relate to birth as well.
I know deep within my heart and soul this work is my calling. As I continue to draw on my personal insights, I can offer a unique blend of compassion, understanding and advocacy for each family and always with much gratitude. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to connecting with you.
